چکیده

Residual stress is that which remains in a body that is stationary and at equilibrium with its surroundings. It can be very detrimental to the performance of a material or the life of a component. Alternatively, beneficial residual stresses can be introduced deliberately. Residual stresses are more difficult to predict than the in-service stresses on which they superimpose. For this reason, it is important to have reliable methods for the measurement of these stresses and to understand the level of information they can provide. In this paper, which is the first part of a two part overview, the effect of residual stresses on fatigue lifetimes and structural integrity are first summarised, followed by the definition and measurement of residual stresses. Different types of stress are characterised according to the characteristic length scale over which they self-equilibrate. By comparing this length to the gauge volume of each technique, the capability of a range of techniques is assessed. In the second part of the overview, the different nature and origins of residual stress for various classes of material are examined. MST/4640A

Plasticity Effect on Residual Stresses Measurement Using Contour Method

Residual stresses have become an important player in the field of the structural integrity for many years. Having an exact knowledge of residual stress distributions can be essential in designing the engineering components as unexpected failures are inevitable where such stresses are ignored.  There are many residual stresses measurement techniques including destructive and non-destructive ones...

Residual Stresses Measurement of a Quenched Cylinder using Slitting Method

Residual Stress measurement has gained interests among researchers for many years due to its great influence on the structural integrity. Slitting method is one of the destructive techniques that relies on the introduction of an increasing cut to a part containing residual stresses. Similar to all other mechanical strain relief techniques, slitting also suffers from its shortcomings during the ...

Stress Variations Effect on the Accuracy of Slitting Method for Measuring Residual Stresses

To maintain the structural integrity of the engineering components, having an exact knowledge of residual stresses is important. Among all mechanical strain relief techniques to measure residual stresses, slitting is one of the youngest. This technique relies on the introduction of a narrow slot of increasing depth in a part containing residual stresses. Similar to other measurement techniques,...
